How to Choose a Surf Fin Size
(RELEVANT FOR LONG BOARD SINGLE FINS)
Generally speaking the size of the fin that you need depends on the size of your longboard.
However, it can also depend on the type of surfing you wish to perform.
A good starting point is simple:
Your fin size roughly matches your board length (in feet --> inches).
So a 9’0" board would want around a 9” fin.
From there, it just depends on how you like to surf...
If you love noseriding
Go a little longer.
A bigger fin sits deeper in the water, giving you more hold and stability when you’re up on the nose.
As a guide:

8’6 – 9’5 → ~9”

9’6 – 10’ → ~9.75”

10’+ → 10” and above
If you want a mix (cruising + turning)
Stick close to the 1:1 rule.
This gives you a balance between hold and manoeuvrability - a really nice all-round feel.
If you prefer performance and tighter turns
Go a little smaller.
A shorter fin loosens things up, making the board feel more responsive and easier to turn.

9’6 – 10’ → ~9”
If you’re running side bites, you can go even smaller on the centre fin (often under 8”), as the side fins will add extra hold.
